The Japan Journal

Gerf
Gerf
Welcome to the Japan Journal. From September 9, 2004 to June 27, 2005, I lived, studied, and worked in Tokyo, Japan. Every single day I was there I wrote an entry in this journal, and any time that I had an Internet connection I made sure to keep this online version of the journal up-to-date. In addition, I took nearly 2000 pictures and videos with my digital camera, many of which are available for viewing here.

Living for such an extended period of time in a foreign land truly changes a person, and I can honestly say that I learned more about myself through this experience than any other in my lifetime. However, this learning did not take the shape of an "Oh, I understand!" but more of a gradual revelation that took many months to complete. I am still feeling the effects of my stay in Japan to this day.

Please keep in mind that the words in this journal represent my life. They are sincere, they are honest, and they are sometimes not always perfectly coherent. They are direct manifestations of my emotions, my hopes, my dreams. And they may be my best link back to Japan that I have.

A note to present-day readers
This journal was designed in a very different time before concepts like responsive web design existed, so it may not be particularly friendly to view on whichever device you are currently using. I may try to reformat the journal for modern devices sometime in the future, but for now please bear with the outdated layout and formatting (or, perhaps, use it as a chance to look back on early-2000s website design ideas).
