Off to Tokyo - The family | 20040909-offtotokyo1.jpg
Before leaving for Tokyo, I was able to get two pictures with the family. Unfortunately, my brother looks like a total doof with his eyes partially closed like that. Ah well. *laughs*

This is a slightly better picture of the family, though now Mom's not there. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. o_O

Off to Tokyo - Chicago layover | 20040909-offtotokyo3.jpg
When I got to Chicago O'Hare International Airport, I met up with some of the Japan Study people for the first time. We had to wait an hour for the plane to Tokyo, so we got some time to mingle and get to know each other. We formed a pretty tight "Chicago group" that day; fortunately, we "included" the other guys from the west coast when we got to Tokyo.

Off to Tokyo - On the 747 | 20040909-offtotokyo4.jpg
This was the first time I had ever flown on a plane as large as a 747, and I must say I was completely blown away. My initial impression was, "Is it legal to transport so many people at once??" They had radios in the seats, televisions and projection screens all over the place, all sorts of food and drink, and they even had beds upstairs for the first-class flyers. It was rather odd seeing the sun in the noontime position for 13 hours, though; we were flying with the spin of the earth, so the sun really didn't seem to set at all. Longest day of my life. Literally. *laughs*
