	The sports festival was held outside of Saki-chan's kindergarten, where many parents were gathered around a large open playing field to watch their young ones do all sorts of great things.

	Sports festival 3 - Tug of war			2004101004.jpg
	One of the events was a parents-versus-parents tug of war. Two rounds were played, and each side won one round... so, it ended up being a draw. That must have been a very interesting surface to play on: the ground was hard and gritty, but slightly damp from the previous day's typhoon rains. I'm surprised nobody totally fell over. They were short a few people on the white team, and were going around the crowds trying to get people to jump in. I thought about joining in, but I'm not the parent of anyone here and I'm not Japanese, either. o_O

	Sports festival 4 - Big Pants Race			2004101005.jpg
	What do you get when you put a parent and his/her kid in a ridiculously large pair of pants? Absolute insanity! This was essentially a relay race in which all the kindergarteners were split into three teams, and the first team to get all of their racers down to the end cone and back won. Saki-chan and Papa's team came in second! Amusing note: many of the parents simply lifted their kids by one arm and dragged/carried them along as they sprinted across the field. Many shoes went flying. It was hilarious.

	At the opening and closing ceremonies, all of the students lined up in neat rows and listened to the speeches. It reminded me of military regiments, actually... but I'm sure there's no connection. ^__^

	At the end of the event, everyone got a medal and a bag of stuff, the contents of which varied from a badminton set to curry rice. No joking. o_O
